Chicago group gets new base

Moving from the city's Southeast to its Northwest represents a good move overall for Chicago Irish Immigrant Support. So believes the Rev. Michael Leonard, a prominent advocate in the community.

"It's more central and more accessible," he said of the move to the recently renovated Irish American Heritage Center.

"It's a different space. We just had a couple of cubicles in the church center. Now we have our own room and we have another meeting room for events and activities with the seniors," he said.

Irish Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn was in town July 14 to cut the ribbon at the new CI-IS base.

"He was very impressed with the whole set up," Leonard reported. "He was delighted to see what we're doing and encouraged us to keep up the good work."

Quinn addressed a group of about 80 seniors at the new center. He thanked them for all the work they did for their homeland as immigrants and said that Ireland as a nation recognizes their contribution.
