Rock’s Galway duo named to all-region soccer squad

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer duo of Emer Flatley and Kara Mullins received recognition on the Daktronics Division II All-Atlantic Region team. Flatley, a junior defender named to the first team, anchored a defense that allowed only 13 goals in 23 matches, while recording 15 shutouts. She also earned credit for three assists during the season. Mullins, a forward named to the second team, led Slippery Rock with 11 goals, five of which were match winners. She also had four assists. Both Flatley and Mullins are from Galway. The Rock, coached by Cork native Noreen Herlihy, completed a 16-5-2 season that saw them advance to the third round of the NCAA playoffs.

MEN’S HOOPS

Jermaine Kamara provided the rebounding and presence at power forward that enabled Ursinus to roll to victories over Haverford, 77-58, in a Wednesday road game and Dickinson, 74-54, at home on Saturday. Kamara, a 6-8 freshman out of Cork, was co-high for the Bears in the Haverford win, pulling down seven caroms. He chipped in six points on 3-for-6 shooting from the floor. He yanked 10 rebounds in the Dickinson rout, to go with two blocks and six points (3-for-7 from the field). Ursinus (3-7) will make its next appearance in the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Drew’s Dara McKeon scored 11 points in the Rangers’ 68-51 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham in Madison, N.J. on Wednesday. McKeon, a 6-3 senior out of Dunboyne, Co. Meath, hit four of 11 field goal attempts, including three of six from 3-point territory. He also had six rebounds (co-high for Drew) and two blocks. Drew is now 2-6.

Mark McFadden knocked down his only 3-point attempt to help Northwestern Ohio defeat Michigan-Dearborn, 78-64, in Lima, Ohio on Saturday. McFadden, a 6-4 junior, is a Dublin native who now resides in Australia. The Racers improved to 4-8 with the victory.

Shane Callaghan hit his only field goal attempt and free throw to finish with three points as Southern Nazarene lost, 85-75, to Science & Arts in Weatherford, Okla. on Saturday. Callaghan is a 6-9 senior from Dublin. The Crimson Storm fell to 6-2 with the loss.

WOMEN’S HOOPS

Orla O’Reilly’s 14 points went a long way in helping Binghamton defeat Army, 49-47, in West Point, N.Y. on Tuesday. O’Reilly, a 6-1 senior from Cork, clicked on five of 13 field goal attempts, including two of seven from the banks of the Hudson River, and two of four from the foul line. Her six rebounds were co-high for the Bearcats (5-4).
