St. Patrick's Day Memories: Geraldine Hughes

Standing in the freezing rain on the Falls Road watching the parade, eating chocolate (because we are allowed to break Lent on that day.) Have you ever marched in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade? I have not.

Five essential Irish albums that should be part of everyone's music library: Anything by Ashley Davis, Black 47, U2, Christy Moore and Clannad. How much green do you wear on March 17th? None if I can help it . . . although if I have fresh shamrock, I wear that. Do you eat corned beef & cabbage on St. Patrick's Day? How about soda bread? Sure, if someone puts it in front of me! Although I had never heard of corn beef and cabbage until I came to the U.S. Corned beef was something that came in a can for me - I had heard of bacon and cabbage, though. Favorite Irish film? "The Quiet Man" . . . seriously. Favorite Irish book? Most recent read Column McCann "Let the Great World Spin." Favorite Irish song? "Fields of Athenry," "Danny Boy," and "Belfast." Complete this sentence: The most Irish thing about me is . . . my skin . . . and my soul.
