Man dies after ice breaks

By Anthony Neeson

A man has died after falling through the ice at a lake in County Armagh.
The 51-year-old, who has still to be named, died on Sunday as Ireland enjoyed a slight thaw after two weeks of snow and ice.
It was reported to police at around 2 p.m. on Sunday that a man had fallen through the ice at Lurgan Park in the town. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Police used a helicopter, and officers managed to hoist the man from the water onto the ice.
However, as other emergency services tried to reach him in a boat, it capsized.
Two Fire Service officers and a paramedic fell into the water "in treacherous conditions", police said.
Two of the emergency service staff swam ashore and one was rescued by the Fire Service special rescue team. They were later taken to hospital.
The 51-year-old man was brought to shore and tended to by paramedics and an off duty doctor who had been in the area at the time.
He was later transferred to Craigavon Area Hospital by the coastguard helicopter where he died a short time later.
