Raytheon out, Seagate in, Derry ahead

That's especially so the case with Derry which recently bid adieu to U.S. weapons manufacturer Raytheon but is now throwing down the welcoming mat to Seagate Technology, a company that is already present but is now intent on creating 85 new jobs in the area.

"This announcement is a huge vote of confidence in the Springtown plant and in the existing workforce there. These additional 85 posts are exactly the sort of high technology posts which we need to secure to develop and boost not only Seagate's presence, but the wider Derry economy, said SDLP leader and local MP, Mark Durkan.

"I am delighted that Seagate is taking steps to co-locate more research and development alongside its manufacturing operation at Springtown. I would commend Seagate's management and workforce for this achievement as well as the role played by Invest NI and Queen's (University) in forging this new link," Durkan said.

The U.S. Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland, Declan Kelly, also welcomed the move.
