Lieutenant Michael Murphy in Afghanistan.

'Murph Challenge' Set For Saturday

As many as 200 athletes from across the USA, including current and former Navy SEALs, are set to participate in the annual  "Murph Challenge” this Saturday, May 25.

The annual event commemorates the 19 SEALs and Army Night Stalkers killed in action and the one survivor of Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005.

The Murph Challenge is a workout performed worldwide every Memorial Day named after Lieutenant Michael Murphy to honor his sacrifice and service, and all who have given their lives on behalf of the United States.

Again this year 200 "cross-fitters," including current and former SEALs, will “Murph'' at the Museum named after posthumous Medal of Honor Michael in West Sayville, Long Island.

This year, stated a release, there will also be a dedication of a new granite monument honoring the "combat dogs" that fight alongside the nation’s Special Operators.

Added the release: "The Murph Challenge is a popular workout performed worldwide every Memorial Day named after LT Murphy to honor his sacrifice and service, and all who have given their lives on behalf of our country.

"Servicemen and women, celebrities, and regular citizens alike participate at hundreds of locations globally. 2024 is the 11th year of The Murph Challenge, and just the second ever held at the Museum.

"'Murph’s' favorite workout is a grueling test of physical and mental endurance. It consists  of a one mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, and another one mile run - with men wearing a 20-lb. weighted vest, and women in a 14-lb. vest.

"The Murph Challenge is the official annual fundraiser of the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, presented by Forged. Since 2014, Forged has raised over $2 million for the Foundation, which now awards 27 scholarships annually.

"The beautiful new black granite memorial to be dedicated honors our nation’s dogs of war. It features a bronze Combat Assault Dog (CAD) on top and is engraved with the names of 12 CADs killed in action."

Athlete check in is at 7 a.m. The monument dedication is set for 1 p.m., or after all athletes having completed the challenge. The museum in honor of Michael is at 50 West Avenue, West Sayville, NY. More at www.MurphSealMuseum.org
