Full Marks for Dervla from SOCIAL Lawyers

The Society of Irish American Lawyers (SOCIAL) has awarded its annual scholarship to Dervla Fitzgerald, a high school senior who attends the Montfort Academy in Mount Vernon, New York.  

SOCIAL awards a scholarship annually to a high school junior or senior of Irish descent who lives in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess or Orange Counties.  

At Monfort, Dervla has maintained a 3.99 grade point average.  She is active in her community as an altar server and helper at St. Barnabas Church in Yonkers and as a member of the St. Joseph the Worker Club at school, where she participates in various service projects.

She is also an accomplished Irish dancer, having danced with the Doherty Petri Irish Dance School since 2007.  She has won World Medals with her céilí team at two World Championships, most recently in 2019, and has competed at the Mid-Atlantic Oireachtas and the North American Irish Dance Championships.  

Dervla will be attending Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia this fall.

SOCIAL was founded in 2019 by attorneys and judges in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange Counties interested in promoting Irish traditions and culture among members of the legal community who live and practice law in the 9th Judicial District of New York.  

It awarded its first scholarship in 2021 and next year’s award will be $2,000.  More information about SOCial and their annual scholarship can be found at sociallawyers.org.
