Martin, Coveney, condemn Capitol assault

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney have both lamented and condemned the riotous scenes at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday which resulted in the death of five people, including a Capitol police officer.

Said Martin in a Twitter statement: "The Irish people have a deep connection with the United States of America built up over many generations. I know tat many, like me, will be watching the scenes unfolding in Washington, D.C. with great concern and dismay."

Minister Coveney said: “We must call this out for what it is: a deliberate assault on Democracy by a sitting President and his supporters.”
