The Irish American Unity Conference has extended "warm congratulations" to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris on their victory in the presidential election.

"We wish them the very best in leading our government in a compassionate and progressive manner, and in helping to heal the painful divisions in our country, and we trust that God will guide them in this difficult undertaking, the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group said in a statement.

The statement continued: "We are also excited to welcome a President who identifies strongly with his Irish roots. President-elect Biden’s great-great-grandfather came from Ballina in County Mayo and he also has ancestral ties to County Louth.

"He has proudly embraced his Irishness and is aware of the oppression to which its citizens have been subjected for many years.

"We are confident that President Biden’s knowledge of Ireland’s issues will inform him of the need to counteract ongoing British efforts to surreptitiously jettison the Good Friday Agreement, which is critical to maintaining peace and justice in the North of Ireland.

"The IAUC looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris Administration in advancing an agenda of fairness and full independence for the thirty-two counties of Ireland."
