Harold Evans and the truth about Bloody Sunday

British journalist Harold Evans has died aged 92. Evans was editor of both the London Times and Sunday Times in a trail blazing career that included his stewardship of the Sunday Times “Insight” investigative team. It was Insight reporters who shredded the official British government version of Bloody Sunday and revealed to the world that members of the Parachute Regiment had initiated gunfire that day and had fired indiscriminately at peaceful protesters in Derry. Evans would later write of Bloody Sunday: “There are many lessons to learn from this tragedy, but it demonstrates yet again how indispensable is journalism to civic life – and to history. The kind of unfettered assiduous reporting in the best investigative reporting enables historians – and official inquiries – to recover a level of detail that would otherwise be lost for good.”
