The Meitheal announces new drop off sites

Supplies at the Aisling Center in Yonkers

By Irish Echo Staff

The Meitheal project, which is aimed at gathering and distributing supplies needed by health care workers, is continuing this week with organizers designating drop off points for Thursday and perhaps Friday, Good Friday, in Yonkers, New York City and on Long Island.

Said a statement: "In the spirit of the Irish tradition of the “meitheal”, in which neighbors support neighbors, and the Irish penchant for not sitting idly by when action is required, a cross-section of the Irish American community has come together to proactively engage in providing aid and relief to those valiant Healthcare workers battling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We ask your cooperation and support in these efforts, initially to source and donate stockpiled or accessible protective gear that can be collected and delivered to identified hospitals in need. In addition, fundraising has commenced with the intention of providing restricted donations to the identified hospitals to be used solely for personal protective equipment purchase, and as the mission unfolds, to help provide meals to the frontline staff.

"In consultation with medical professionals, we should concentrate our efforts on procuring the following equipment that may be warehoused by or available to construction and building trades:

N95 or N99 masks (commonly used in construction)

Tyvek Suits: hooded "bunny" suits or non-hooded variety

Gloves, rubber or nitrile

Face shields

Goggles

"These can be immediately used. In addition, cleaning supplies must be very specific: Any cleaning wipes or liquid that is 70% alcohol or above; Bleach or bleach-based cleaning products; Anything specifically labeled as 'viricudal' Hand Sanitzers

In addition, one of the corollaries of PPE use is dehydration. If we could source bottled water and sports type drinks (gatorade, electrolyte based, etc, but NOT sodas or sugar based soft drinks) that would be helpful." Other businesses that may have some of this equipment include: Salons, Restaurants, Hardware Stores.
