Keane replaces Hickey

Swim Ireland's Sarah Keane is congratulated by board member and former world-champion athlete Sonia O'Sullivan after being elected Olympic Council of Ireland president at Thursday night’s EGM in Dublin.

Keane easily outpolled the other candidates, garnering 29 votes to 12 for acting president Willie O’Brien and two for Basketball Ireland’s Bernard O’Byrne. She replaces long-time incumbent Pat Hickey, who made world headlines when he was arrested in his Brazil hotel during an investigation into illegal ticket sales at the Rio Olympics.

The 71-year-old Hickey returned home to Dublin in December for medical treatment. A group of Olympic committees throughout the world agreed to pay his bail of about £330,000.
