Stated a release: Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 is an initiative by Cobh Town Council to commemorate the centenary of the Titanic tragedy and to memorialize the great ship and the people associated with her. The committee is hosting a year long series of commemorative events.

One of the projects planned by the Titanic 100 committee is the erection of a unique glass wall memorial at the town's Titanic Memorial Park. On the wall will be etched an image of the ship that when viewed through the glass will be an exact simulation of the vessel at its anchorage 100 years ago.

The wall will also be inscribed with the names of those who boarded the ship at Cobh/Queenstown. The committee, according to the Cork Association, needs to raise €80,000 to realize this worthy objective.

The April 29th event will commence at 1.p.m. with Mass for the deceased celebrated by Fr. James Drew, chaplain of the County Cork Association. Brunch provided by the Bantry Bay Publick House will follow. Speakers will include Dr. Michael Martin, ambassador for Cobh Titanic 100, author, historian and creator of the Titanic Trail; Dr. Miriam Nyhan of NYU Ireland House; Hon. James Quinlan, mayor of Cobh, Co. Cork; and Hon. Christine Quinn, NYC Council Speaker. Music will be arranged by New York Irish artist Donie Carroll.

Admission is $40 and raffle tickets will also be on sale for generous prizes. For information: Mae O'Driscoll (718)891-0388; Treasa Goodwin Smyth (718) 651-7336 and Patrick Hurley (718)898-1425.
