As Gaeilge in New Jersey

It was a rousing start to say the least. The pipes and drums of the Passaic County Emerald Society heralded the recent opening of a new Irish bar and restaurant, the Shannon Rose, in Ramsey, New Jersey.

Proprietor Ed Doherty is keeping his Irish up not just in terms of the food and drink menu, but also by the fact that patrons can brush up on their Gaeilge over a pint of plain.

"Ceadúnaithe chun Deochanna Meisciúla a Dhíol," (licensed to sell alcohol) reads the sign over the front door which is now, no pun intended, well and truly ajar.
