Better late

President Obama finally took aim at the heart of the economic malaise last week when he addressed a joint session of Congress on the matter of jobs, or rather the lack of them.

The president has been talking about jobs for quite some time now, but not with the clear tone of urgency that he employed before an audience of Congress members and millions who tuned in.

On the issue of jobs, or lack of them, it was an eleventh hour address, but the president's words were nevertheless welcome. Better late than never indeed.

Those words resonated across the aisle, but it was quickly clear that not all of them were falling on fertile ground, at least as far s some Republicans were concerned. But some of them were.

It would be a good idea if both parties quickly identified those areas upon which they can agree and ensure legislative passage of same. The areas of disagreement can then be debated and argued over, hopefully with compromise the end result.

Half a loaf is better than no loaf, but what's better again is two half loaves. We simply can't afford another round of bickering in Washington based on each party's perception of ideological advantage.

Our current crop of national legislators should consider themselves lucky to have their own jobs and need now to work rather than stall or argue, on behalf of all Americans, both unemployed and employed.
