What it taught me: This undergraduate experience helped me decide that I wanted to pursue a career researching computer technologies to benefit people with disabilities.

Three things people would be surprised to know about me:

1. I know American Sign Language (ASL) because my lab develops software that creates animations of ASL for people who are deaf.

2. I lived in Dublin from 2001-2002 where I attended University College Dublin on a George Mitchell Scholarship.

3. While my grandfather was German (and hence my last name), my family ancestry is primarily Irish (from Mayo, Roscommon and Tyrone).

Best advice you could give someone starting out: Be adventurous in learning new things and diving into new experiences; you might be surprised about what captures your imagination and leads you in new directions in your career.
