Andrew JP Murray

Age: 30

Place of Birth: Belfast, Ireland

Where you live: New York City

First Job: Associate at O’Dwyer & Bernstein LLP

What it taught me: I learnt a great deal from my first job in the United States but one of the things that stood out was how the legal system can serve the underpriviledged working people of New York.

On a personal note, I learnt that to a large degree when arrving in America you are reliant on the willingness of others to give you a chance to prove yourself as you can be somewhat of an unknown quantity to American employers.

In that regard I was extremely lucky to find O’Dwyer and Bernstein and people like Brian O’Dwyer.

Status: Single

Three things people would be surprised to know about me:

1. My mood at the weekend is dictated to a large extent by the performance of Liverpool Football Club

2. I became a proud uncle in November 2010.

3. I enjoy running, golf and have recently taken up boxing.

Best advice you could give someone starting out: Do not be modest about your achievements and what you can offer an employer.

This can be an Irish tendency and is one of the resons we are such pleasant company but it will not serve you well in the competitive American job market. Convey entushusiasm at all times.
