A Maori/Irish connection

Ireland's Ambassador to New Zealand, Peter Ryan, is pictured with Nanaia Mahuta, the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand. According to Ambassador Ryan, a former Irish Deputy Consul General in New York, Minister Mahuta is proud of also having Irish heritage, she having an ancestor from Ireland named Ormsby who landed in New Zealand in the 1840s and married into her Maori family. "We look forward to welcoming Minister Mahuta to Ireland on a future occasion when things are closer to normality," said Ambassador Ryan.
