Scaled back tributes for 1916

Official commemorations went ahead to mark the 104th anniversary of the 1916 Rising but they they were dramatically reduced in scope and scale. An Irish army office read out the Proclamation to a virtually empty O'Connell Street. President Michael D Higgins took part in a private ceremony at his official residence, Aras an Uachtarain, and here, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is pictured during a ceremony without onlookers at the GPO.
