Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been called a fair few things of late, most of them not complimentary, most of the time by Democrats.
But now he has been labeled a Marie Antoinette - and by a fellow Republican.
Speaking on the Hugh Hewitt radio show Wednesday, McConnell (R-KY) said he didn’t want Congress to come to states’ fiscal rescue amid the economic chaos caused by the Coivd-19 pandemic.
As reported by the political newspaper Roll Call, McConnell stated: “My guess is their first choice would be for the federal government to borrow money from future generations to send it down to them now, so they don’t have to do that,” McConnell said. “That’s not something I’m going to be in favor of.”
He said the states truly struggling should opt for bankruptcy.
This assertion caused uproar around the country.
It also resulted in New York GOP Congressman Peter King, co-chair of the Friends of Ireland in Congress, to slap McConnell with a brand new nickname.
"McConnell’s dismissive remark that States devastated by Coronavirus should go bankrupt rather than get the federal assistance they need and deserve is shameful and indefensible," Roll Call reported Long Islander King as saying.
"To say that it is 'free money' to provide funds for … cops, firefighters and healthcare workers makes McConnell the Marie Antoinette of the Senate," King said on Twitter.
