Recalling an unlikely friendship

The Rev. David Latimer, here pictured by the American flag, took questions at the Irish Consulate in New York last Tuesday evening after his presentation on “A Leap of Faith: How Martin McGuinness and I Worked Together for Peace.” As he recalls in the book, in 2007 Latimer made a public plea to the Deputy First Minister McGuinness when his Derry church, a perennial target, was splattered with paint. In time, a warm friendship was forged between the Presbyterian minister, a unionist, and the late nationalist politician and former IRA leader. More photos from the event hosted by Deputy Consul General Seán Ó hAodha will appear in this week’s print/digital Echo published on Wednesday. PHOTO BY PETER MCDERMOTT
