A ceremonial last step at Michael’s museum

Lieutenant Michael Murphy

By Ray O’Hanlon

A new museum honoring the life and sacrifice of Navy SEAL Michael Murphy is almost complete, but there remains one last piece of steel to be fitted to the building in West Sayville, Long Island in New York.

The ceremonial topping off ceremony for the Lt. Michael P Murphy Navy Seal Museum and Sea Cadets Training Facility is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, Michael’s birthday.

The final piece of steel, forged by what a release calls “very generous craftsmen,” will be signed by family members and trustees of the new facility.

Michael Murphy gave his life for his SEAL comrades in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings in June, 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Irish Echo named him posthumously to our very first list of 40-Under 40 Award recipients.

Murphy’s heroism is depicted in the book and the movie “Lone Survivor.”

In recognition of Murphy’s bravery and dedication the United States Navy named an Arleigh Burke Class destroyer after him.

The USS Michael Murphy – “The Murph” – is based at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
