East Durham, New York, in the northern Catskills, is often dubbed “Little Ireland,” this due to its numerous Irish-themed inns, clubs and restaurants.

The area’s biggest annual event, Gavinstock, is set for this weekend Friday, August 17 to Sunday, August 19.

Gavinstock is an Irish music and culture festival that has been getting bigger every year.

This weekend there will be over ten bands performing on two stages, including Shilelagh Law, Celtic Cross, The Canny Brothers Band, Jameson’s Revenge, Bangers and Mash, Ireland the Band, Slainte, The Crooked Jacks, The Narrowbacks, The Ruffians and The Prodigals.

The music, according to a release, varies from Dropkick Murphys-style punk-stomp to more placid and traditionally based acoustic guitar penny whistle ballads.

The headquarters for Gavinstock is Gavin’s, founded in 1961 and now in its third generation of family ownership. The inn consists of fifty rooms, most situated around a large swimming pool. The music festival takes place both indoors and outdoors.

Meanwhile, back in New York City, one of the most popular bands to come out of Limerick in recent times, Hermitage Green, is playing at Bowery Electric on Thursday, August 16 and Friday August 17.
