In Boston, building bridges over uncertain waters

The Seaport Hotel, venue for the Golden Bridges conference

The old saying that this is a time of flux has never been more the case but even in an uncertain time building bridges never fails to steady the state of affairs.

And the occasion of the Ninth Annual Golden Bridges Conference is an opportunity for a steadying hand to be applied on both sides of the Atlantic, this again the backdrop of a Brexit process that is generating uncertainty at an unprecedented level.

No matter what the outcome of this process, Ireland will continue to look to America for partnerships that navigate themselves around newly erected impediments.

And the Northwest of Ireland will look in particular to Boston and Massachusetts for a relationship that is not only maintained, but enhanced, no matter what change is in store.

So this year’s Golden Bridges Conference, set for Friday, November 17 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston, will continue the process, started in 2008, of building on existing and long honored transatlantic ties.

Golden Bridges spotlights community, business and education initiatives in Northwest Ireland and promotes partnerships with our friends in Boston and Massachusetts.

These partnerships have always been important, but given what is looming in the immediate years ahead they must, of necessity, be raised to an entirely new level.

The task of doing so begins at this week’s Golden Bridges gathering.

Meanwhile, the conferences, while focused on traditional matters of business, trade and investment, will also be hearing about ambitious plans to bring the Quinnipiac University Museum of Ireland's Great Hunger exhibition to Ireland in 2019.

“At a time when global hunger is rarely far from our headlines, there can hardly be a more apposite time to bring home the greatest collection of artworks in the world relating to An Gorta Mór,” said conference convener, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir.

“The annual Golden Bridges Conference builds bridges between Northwest Ireland and Boston. Could there be a more appropriate place for this evocative collection to go on show than Derry and Donegal?”
