Throwback Thursday

Hard time on high seas

This week in 1588 was a bad one for the Spanish Armada. La Girona, a galleass, foundered and sank off Lacada Point, Dunluce, County Antrim, on the night of October 26/27 after making its way eastward along the Irish coast from Killybegs in County Donegal. The wreck is considered noteworthy for the loss of life that resulted, and for the treasures since recovered. Of the estimated 1300 on board, only nine survived.
