Throwback Thursday

Forty years ago this week Ireland’s fifth president, Cearbhall O Dalaigh, resigned after defense minister Patrick Donegan called him a “thundering disgrace,” this after O Dalaigh had referred a new emergency powers bill to the Irish Supreme Court in order to test its constitutionality. O Dalaigh would state that he resigned in order to “protect the dignity and independence of the presidency as an institution.”
