Astronaut lands in Kerry

Dr. Kathryn Sullivan (right) the first American woman astronaut to walk in space, is seen here visiting her relations, Nora (left) and Kathleen O’Sullivan, at their home in Lauragh on the Beara Peninsula, Co. Kerry. Kathryn’s grandfather, Denis “Lea” O’Sullivan from Upper Lauragh, immigrated to New York in 1893 and eventually settled in California. This was Sullivan’s second visit to the Irish family homestead. Kathryn is now Chief U.S. Scientist and Director of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Photo courtesy Valerie O’Sullivan.
