'My Last Day at Seventeen’

American photographer Doug DuBois was introduced to a group of teenagers from the Russell Heights housing estate while an artist in residence at the Sirius Arts Center in Cobh, Co. Cork, in 2009. He’d no inkling then that his month-long residency would turn into a five-year project. He would become fascinated by the complex connections between the teenagers in the insular neighborhood. A follow-up to his acclaimed first book, “All the Days and Nights” (Aperture, 2009), his “My Last Day at Seventeen” is an examination of the uncertainties of growing up in Ireland today, while highlighting the unique relationship sustained between artist and subject.

DuBois has photographs in the collections of and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, J. Paul Getty Museum and several other institutions. He has photographed for the New York Times Magazine, Time, Details and GQ. He teaches in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University.

Aperture Foundation will host a talk and signing by DuBois on Friday, Oct. 2, at Aperture Gallery and Bookstore 547 West 27th Street New York, N.Y. It begins at 6:30 p.m. DuBois will be joined by joined by special guest Eirn Mackessy, one of his subjects from the series.
