Kernan to manage Ulster in revived series

Joe Kernan will resume his role as Ulster football manager for next year's revived interprovincial series. The former Armagh All-Ireland winning manager was in charge of the Ulster team which won the last interprovincial championship to be staged in 2009, and has been a leading advocate of the series formerly known as the Railway Cup. ''The players want it and that's enough for me,'' said Kernan. Former Meath manager Seán Boylan was earlier confirmed as Leinster manager.

Meanwhile, former Kilkenny hurler D.J. Carey has taken his first steps in management by agreeing to take charge of his own club Young Irelands for 2012. Carey, who made a dramatic return to first-team action with his club last summer at the age of 40, will be assisted by his brother Martin.

In football news, Nigel Crawford, who is 32, was at midfield on Meath's last All-Ireland winning team in 1999, but he was unable to command a regular starting place last season. He will continue to play for his club Dunboyne. The 38-year-old former Kerry star Seamus Moynihan has now quit his club Glenflesk.
