Mr. Adams, 56, originally from West Belfast, denies all claims being made against him. He was extradited from the Republic of Ireland, where he had been living, last month.

Adams appeared for preliminary enquiry proceedings at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Monday.

A district judge granted a prosecution application for the case to progress to the next stage.

The accused has been returned for trial at the Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Mr. Adams was remanded back into custody until that hearing gets underway.

The allegations against Adams were first reported when Ms. Tyrell took part in a UTV television documentary in 2009.
