More visitors to Ireland

Well, something's working right. The number of vacationers visiting Ireland between April and June of this rose by 240,000 over the same period in 2010.

Official figures show that more than 1.7 million trips were made in that timeframe, up 15 percent on the same period last year.

Arrivals from North America went up by 17 percent to 308,800. Visitors from the UK rose by 8.5 percent to 761,000 while the numbers from the rest of Europe went up by a quarter to more than 620,000.

The number of overseas trips by Irish residents also went up, to just over 1.7 million, a 5.9 percent rise over the 2010 equivalent period.

According to the Irish government's Central Statistics Office, about 6.7 million overseas visitors came to the island of Ireland in 2010. About half that number made the short hop from Britain.
