TV kicks off summer with ‘Rockaway’ documentary

June 1, 2011

By Staff Reporter

“The Bungalows of Rockaway,” which was first shown in 2010, will be screened on THIRTEEN/WNET on both Saturday (12:00) and Sunday (2:30) afternoons.

The documentary recalls how working-class Irish and Jewish families fled the broiling heat of Manhattan’s tenements for their summer homes on the Queens peninsula and also tells the present-day story of New York’s only ocean-side community.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and her father Laurence Quinn are among the interviewees.

“It’s a terrific summer kick-off,” said producer Elizabeth Logan Harris. “We recently had a standing-room-only screening at the Tenement Museum – so, ‘Bungalows’ audiences remain enthusiastic and ever growing.”

“It’s been wonderful to hear from so many people, including many readers of the Irish Echo, about the film,” said director Jennifer Callahan. “I think there needs to be a film focused solely on the Seaside area. Anyone out there want to do it?”

Callahan added that the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. plans to screen the film soon.
