Meadow, Alabama come up short at NCAA

Stephanie Meadow of the University of Alabama tied for 32nd place in the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf Championship at Traditions Golf Club in College Station, Tex. She shot 10-over-par 298 (75-74-77-72), leaving her 17 strokes off the winning score recorded by Austin Ernst of Louisiana State. Meadow is a freshman from Jordanstown, Co. Antrim.

Teamwise, Alabama finished with a share of eighth place, 20 strokes in back of champion UCLA. The Crimson Tide had hoped to show better, having won their regional tournament amid high emotions in the aftermath of the tornadoes that destroyed much of Tuscaloosa, the town in which their campus is located.

“The expectations were pretty high coming in, and if we are going to be a top program we have to learn to deal with those expectations in a better way,” said Mic Potter, Alabama’s head coach.

Barton College qualified for the match play segment of the NCAA Division 2 Men’s Championship at The Shoals in Florence, Ala. Barton tied for seventh-place in the medal-play portion and was then eliminated by eventual champion Lynn College, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of match play.

Barton freshman Dermot McElhennon finished joint-39th at 10-over-par 226 (73-79-74) in medal play. He then met Lynn’s Paul McPhee in match play and lost by one hole. McElhennon lives in New Bern, N.C. with his parents, who came to the U.S. from Draperstown, Co. Derry. — John Manley
