Sonia O’Sullivan’s impressive preparations for the European Championships in Budapest in August continued apace when she broke the world two-mile record Saturday at the Cork City Sports.

Even if the distance is now rarely contested, O’Sullivan demonstrated her good from by shaving no less than 9 seconds off American Lynn Jennings’s 13-year-old mark.

Her time of 9 minutes, 19.56 seconds included a last 400 meters of 63.74, which was particularly sharp considering she had been in front for the previous three laps. O’Sullivan’s next race will be the 1500 at the Oslo Golden Grand Prix on July 9.

Meanwhile, Mark Carroll defied the windy conditions to win the 5000 meters in a top-class time of 13:20.28, while James Nolan took the 800 in 1:47.10, which qualifies the promising 21-year-old for the European championships.
