N.Y. GAA Previews Cork aiming for Div. I

Junior Football A

Celtics vs Rangers

12.30 p.m.

Here are two more sides attempting to make it out of the junior set up, and into the the pond with the bigger fish. This is probably one of the tougher divisions to escape from and both teams are truly up against the odds this year.

Having witnessed Rockland, the team which defeated Rangers in the Junior A final last year, do so well so far in the senior ranks, Denis Tuomey’s side will certainly be out for victory in this tie to grab their second victory of the season.

Celtics, with a number of great young players on their books will no doubt be out to clinch a victory, and really the eventual winner of the tie will depend on who is more hunger for a win going into the game.

I predict a Rangers victory.

Junior Hurling

Conn. St vs Tipp/Galway

2 p.m.

Junior hurling is not something we see that often at Gaelic Park, but with the senior lads preparing to fly home to compete in the All Ireland championships, we are afforded a rare glimpse into the junior set up.

In last year’s junior game at Gaelic Park, Galway competed in a phenomenal scorefest, in which more than 15 goals were scored.

Let’s hope for something similar in this tie.

Senior Football A

Tyrone vs Sligo

3.30 p.m.

Tyrone, on a high since their victory over Ulster rivals Donegal a few weeks back, will certainly be favorites going into this tie. Much was said about Tyrone’s loss of various key players from last season before their first game, but they seem to have come through the exodus relatively unscathed. Losing Sean Teague and Martin Slowey to Ireland, and Slowey’s younger brother Michael to rivals Monaghan was never going to be an easy hurdle to climb, but all credit to them, they’ve seemingly conquered the odds.

Sligo, will be out for a victory to begin the long road towards play-off contention, but they’ll be truly up against it on Sunday. If Enda Henry’s on form though, who knows what will happen?

Senior Football B

Cork vs Mayo

5 p.m.

Cork, relegated from Div. I last season after enduring a horrendous string of results, will be out to clinch victory to begin the long climb back to Div. I.

Mayo, having played well in their first game of the season will be out to prevent an immediate return to the top flight for the Munster side. If the Mayo forward line can get off the mark straight from the first whistle, I feel that they’ll cause something of an upset.
