Minor Board Cassels propels Rangers to U-10 title

Rangers 4-5, St. Ray’s 3-4 (U-10)

On Sunday morning at Gaelic Park in the Under-10 Championship final of 1998, the Rangers defeated St. Raymond’s. The early stages of this game saw Rangers get off to a great start, building an early lead. St. Raymond’s fought back gallantly in the second half but could not overcome the Rangers’ defense, which was led by Stephen Cassels at center halfback. His performance capped a sensational season that saw him earn the Under-10 Player of the Year award.

The Ranger are Eamon Nugent, Ronan McGoldrick, Peter Woods, Kevin O’Shea, Dennis McGoldrick, Stephen Cassels, Pierce Cassels, Chris Cassels, Lorcan Malone, Kevin O’Driscoll, Sean Twomey, Padraig Phelan, P.J. Wagner, Mike Carrigy and Tim Lynch.

The St. Raymond’s lineout was Jonathan Dedrary, Dennis Kilkenny, John Greaney, Tom Enright, Kathleen Enright, Sean Johnson, Pete Smith, Danny Sullivan, Chris Delano, Pete Lamanchio, James Lamanchio, Tom Huvane, Vincent Tidino, Chris McKenna, Tim Sullivan and Brian Cahillane.

Barnabas 3-8, Celtics 1-10

At Paddy’s Field on Sunday in the replay of their semifinal, St. Barnabas defeated the Celtics. This was a fast-paced game that saw the score level many times during the course of play. Both sides had some well-taken scores, and the overall standard of play was excellent. As the game swayed back and forth, Sean Farrelly of the Celtics cracked a goal that will be remembered for quite some time, soloing 40 yards and then unleashing a cannon-like shot from 30 yards out that found a home in the back of the St. Barnabas net.

Not to be outdone, David Hannon scored a great goal to put St. Barnabas back on top with five minutes remaining in the contest. Joey Grazioso then kicked a great point to earn a place in the final for the Woodlawn boys.

St. Barnabas had many fine players, among them were Matt Brady, Matt Saunders, Eamon Duffy, Douglas Brady, Billy Slattery and Kevin Hannon. The Celtics got tremendous performances from Gary McGurk, Kevin Hegarty, Ed Sheeran, Anthony Goodwin, Brian Slattery, John McArdle and James Farrelly.
