Richard Coughlan earned a paycheck in his second outing of the 2001 PGA Tour season. The Clemson University grad from Birr, Co. Offaly, was one shot off the first-round lead in the Sony Open in Hawaii after firing a five-under-par 65. But he fell back with a second-round 71, which was followed by rounds of 70 and 74. His final score of even-par 280 was 20 strokes behind medalist Brad Faxon and left him tied for 51st place. Coughlan earned $9,413.

David Higgins’s elevation to the European Tour resulted in his participation in the Alfred Dunhill Championship, played in Johannesburg, South Africa. Higgins, of Waterville, Co. Kerry, tied for 23rd place at even-par 278 (69-70-71-68).

Paul McGinley had the best showing of the four Irishmen in the field. He tied for 16th place at two-under-par 276 (67-71-68-70). Australia’s Adam Scott won the tournament with a four-round total of 267. Missing the cut by five strokes were James Loughnane and Peter Lawrie, both of whom shot 146 for 36 holes.
