Deane ignites Barnabas

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

At the start of the second half, with his team trailing by 2-3 to 0-5, Shane Flanagan of St. Barnabas converted a 30-yard free. Shane Hogan followed with another point and then, in the fifth minute, kicked a high ball that landed in the St. Joe’s square and, after some indecision by the keeper and his teammates, the ball hopped over the onlookers and landed in the net.
With barnabas now leading, the St. Joe’s keeper, Chris Visconi, more than atoned for himself with several lightning-fast saves. But Flanagan showed his class as he responded by scoring a lovely curling point. Just when all seemed to be turning bad for St. Joseph’s, Mike O’Reilly made a great catch 50 yards from the Woodlawn goal and when his solo run drew a couple of St. Barnabas defenders out of position, he passed to Chris Lisi, who scored his second goal of the match and gave his side the lead, 3-3 to 1-8.
Conor Flanagan’s point tied the score once again with 10 minutes remaining. St. Joseph’s were awarded a 14-yard free and Mike O’Reilly’s shot skimmed the cross bar and inched over for a point. Not to be outdone, Conor Flanagan kicked the equalizer with 5 minutes to go. Dion Nurney was playing a strong second half for St. Barnabas and his pass to Shane Hogan helped set up Mike Rukaj for the go-ahead point. In the final minute, midfield maestro Shane Flanagan unleashed a pass to Liam Deane and the center forward iced the victory with a great goal.
For St. Barnabas, James Hannon, John Quinn, Frankie McDermott, Dermot King, James Mullen, Ashley Callery and Joe Rukaj played well. Best for St. Joe’s were Chris Visconi, Joe McNerney, Carl Foley and Kevin Traynor. Players of the Match were both Shane Flanagan and James Hannon of St. Barnabas and Mike O’Reilly and Sean Ruane of St. Joseph’s.

Undeterred, St. Raymond’s raced upfield and Padraig O’Connor raised himself high in the air to perfectly meet a Shane Denneny cross and fist the ball into the net. Time would not be an ally to St. Raymond’s, and as the final whistle blew.
Best for St. Ray’s were Denis Kilkenny, Thomas Huvane, Thomas Enright and keeper Dean Manchand. For St. Barnabas, Tom Vaughan, Brendan McMorrow and Anthony Ciena excelled. Players of the Match were Sean Slattery of St. Raymond’s and Pat Hallinan of St. Barnabas.
