College Roundup Antrim’s Devlin a close 2d

Chris Devlin took second place in the Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The Alabama-Birmingham junior from County Antrim finished one shot behind Augusta State’s Jamie Elson, who won with a score of 208. Devlin, who was attempting to win his first tournament since his freshman year, posted rounds of 68, 72 and 69 for a sum of 209, which was seven under par. UAB finished eighth in the 19-team event.

East Tennessee State’s Eamonn Brady is also on the verge of a win. The Dublin senior tied for third place in the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm in Rock Face, Ga. Brady’s 5-under-par 211 (68-71-72) left him seven strokes off Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech, who shot 204. Clemson’s Michael Hoey, a Belfast freshman, tied for 60th place at 11-over 227 (80-69-78). Clemson tied for ninth place, while ETSU tied for 11th.

California’s Dan Coyle managed a tie for 24th place in the Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Cal. Coyle, a senior from Dundalk, was 12 over par with his 152 (80-72). Stanford’s Joel Kribel was the winner at 139. California tied for seventh place in the team scramble.

Tennis

Indiana’s George McGill won both singles matches he played last week. Competing at third singles, the junior from Castleroy, Co. Limerick, defeated Michigan’s John Long, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, and Michigan State’s Ivica Primoral, 6-2, 6-3. McGill is 6-0 at third singles this spring against Big Ten rivals.

The 49th-ranked Hoosiers dropped the match to Michigan, 4-3, but bounced back to defeat Michigan State, 4-3.

Harvard enjoyed easy victories over Ivy League rivals Columbia, 6-1, and Cornell, 7-0. John Doran defeated Columbia’s Scott Watnick at second doubles, 6-1, 6-3, while fellow Dubliner Joe Green nailed down a win at the four position over Pavle Jefferson, 6-0, 6-3. Green also joined Scott Clark at second doubles for a victory over Watnick and Erik Zmara, 8-6.

Doran moved up to first singles in the Cornell match, where he dispatched Mike Halperin, 6-1, 6-0. Green was successful at second singles, where he defeated Greg Artzt, 6-4, 6-3. Green and Clark also won their doubles match with Halperin and Stefan Paulovic, 8-4. Harvard is ranked 23rd in the country. Doran ranks 96th in singles play in Div. I.

Mississippi State’s Eimear Sloan returned to the court, not fully recovered from an elbow fracture, but posted two singles victories last week. The Dublin junior, playing at fourth singles, began with a win over Arkansas’ Tara Reid, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Arkansas won the match, 5-4. Sloan played the number five position against Alabama, handling Kathleen Mele, 6-1, 6-4. MSU, ranked 45th, won the match 7-2.

Claire Curran was a beacon for California as the Golden Bears dropped a 5-1 decision to Stanford. Curran, a Dublin junior, won her team’s only point with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Jennifer Heiser at fifth singles. California then recovered with a 5-4 defeat of Arizona State. Curran moved up to fourth singles, where she defeated Kerry Giardino, 6-3, 6-2.

Rice lost to Texas Christian, but Robert Collins held fast at second singles, where he defeated TCU’s Trace Fielding, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Collins and Prakash Venkataraman won their doubles match over Fielding and Petr Koula, 8-5. TCU won the match 4-3.

Track and Field

Providence proved a force in the distance events at the UConn Invitational last Saturday. Freshman Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Co. Galway, finished second at 1,500 meters to teammate Ben Noad. Reilly ran the distance in 3:56.59, while Noad was clocked in 3:56.11.

Larry Morrissey, a junior from Waterford, was second at 800 meters to Massachusetts’ Dan Leboeuf. Morrissey’s time of 1:57.34 was .25 seconds off the winning clocking. Limerick sophomore Ciaran Lynch placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, won by teammate Rick Bush. Lynch got the distance in 9:38.20; Bush ran it in 9:23.97.

Dermot Galvin, a freshman from Kilrush, Co. Clare, was fourth in the 3,000 meters, with a time of 8:38.16. Iona’s Chris Longo win in 8:30.08.
