Golden Bridges Honoree: Kieran Jordan
October 7, 2009
Kieran Jordan is a Boston-based performer, teacher, and choreographer of Irish dance. With more than 25 years of dance experience, her unique approach to dance marries deep-rooted traditions with contemporary innovations.
Jordan has been teaching Irish dance in the Boston area since 2001. Her classes were the first of their kind in New England - designed specifically for adults in a non-competitive format - with a focus on embodied technique, musicality, and performance skills, as well as Irish dance history and community traditions.
Jordan has a particular passion for sean-nós dancing (improvised, old-style Irish dance), and has become a major figure in introducing it to the Irish dance scene in the U.S. She has produced two independent videos on sean-nós dance, a documentary called "Secrets of the Sole" and a new instructional DVD entitled "Musical Feet."
Winner of a 2008 Artist Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Kieran holds a BA in English and Irish Studies from Boston College, a master's degree in Contemporary Dance Performance from the University of Limerick, Ireland, and the TCRG certificate for teaching Irish dance.
Jordan taught for two years on the dance faculty at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She teaches annually at the Catskills Irish Arts Week in New York. She has also presented workshops at universities and festivals in Ireland, Canada, Sweden, and throughout the U.S.
Jordan has collaborated with many of New England's finest traditional musicians, is a frequent performer at concerts and festivals across North America and is dance director for the WGBH production of "A Christmas Celtic Sojourn."
Since joining the show six years ago, Jordan has performed with top Celtic acts such as Solas, Danú, Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, Karan Casey and Niall Vallely, the Sharon Shannon Band, Mulcahy Family, and more. Her dancing and choreography are featured on the "A Christmas Celtic Sojourn" DVD.
Most lately, Jordan has opened a new dance studio in Cambridge devoted specifically to percussive dance.
