An Irish immigrant who was assaulted in a Staten Island Park seven weeks ago was buried in his native County Westmeath last Friday.
Darren O'Donnell died from his injuries in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan on May 16 after being transferred to the top medical facility from a hospital in Staten Island.
O'Donnell, according to reports, had worked in the construction industry and was known in New York GAA circles.
It is believed that O'Donnell, who was 32, might not have immediately reported the assault to police, or sought emergency treatment, because he was undocumented and fearful of having to deal with authorities.
O'Donnell, from Athlone, was interred after a funeral in St. Mary's Church in the town.
